A: FAQ is an acronym for "frequently asked questions." | Q: What is a FAQ of the Day? A: This is where I post one or more of the many questions posed to me during the course of my day. | Q: I have AOL dial-up for $14.99 a month. I want to be able to be online and make calls on my phone without having to invest in a second phone line. What do you recommend? A: Currently Verizon is offering a $14.99 intro deal. After a period of one to 3 or even 6 months, the price will revert to the full $17.99/month. DSL uses your current phone line (provided it meets certain conditions). DSL does not use the dial tone, think of it as using a different frequency, keeping your phone available for normal use. The greatest benefit is the tremendous increase in speed. Many report the feeling of having a new computer. DSL is rather finnicky service as it relies on how close you are to the main connection. Verizon won't offer service if you are more than 20,000 feet (4 miles /-) from the connection. For the best service, you should be no more than 10,000 feet (2 miles) from the connection, the closer the better. | Q: Last night I turned off my PC, this morning I get nothing when i hit the power switch. No fans, no lights, no monitor. A: It is likely that the power supply died. If you smoke or have more than average dust conditions, the fan in the power supply clogs up and dies. When this happens, the circuits in the power supply overheat and they die. In some extreme cases, the power supply will malfunction and anything connected to it could fry as well, including the processor, motherboard, even hard drive. A new power supply can be an easy fix. A new 300 watt power supply should run no more than $25. Most systems built since January 2005 may require more power, and some EMachines and HP's and others use a proprietary power supply that may run substantially more ($90 ordered). Thankfully, the majority of the computers out there take a standard off the-shelf power supply. | | |
